Eppler 21

Eppler war, as described on the
caliber 17
a manufacturer of cheapest pin lever movements. Only a few movement, which based on
then 10 1/2 ligne construction, were of a better quality, such as the rare caliber 21
described here.
The Eppler 21 has got a shock protected balance, which runs in two Rufa-Anti-Shock
systems. The hairspring is properly fixated and not glued and even the hairspring
regulator is of good quality. The escapement is a true pallet anchor escapement and
drives a fully jewelled movement. With 17 jewels (2 of them are cap jewels) it is almost
equal to a "good" movement, only the large height indicates the origin of that movement.
On the dial side, there's still the rocking bar winding mechanism, but at least the
minute train and exchange wheel are made of metal and no longer of plastics.
It is really astonishing, how an ugly (pin lever) duckling can be transformed into
a nice (pallet anchor) swan - it's a pity, that this is such a rare species.
